A Brief List of Ways that Ableist and Misogynistic Oppressions Intersect

1) Women with disabilities are (still) often forcibly sterilised

2) Women with disabilities, especially those in institutions, are particularly vulnerable to rape

3) Women with disabilities are often denied access to sex ed (which perpetuates the vulnerabilities in #2)

4) Women with disabilities are often denied access to birth control by doctors who believe they ought not to be having sex

5) Women with disabilities are often denied their sexuality, especially those whose disability is physically recognised by TAB people.

6) Women with disabilities are also expected to be superwomen, just like their able-bodied counterparts, only they often have less spoons to do so

7) Women with disabilities are vilified for choosing to parent as they choose (which can, for example, include refusing cochlear implants for their children, or refusing to terminate fetuses with disabilities, or even actively selecting for disabilities)

8) Women with disabilities are taught that their bodies are inadequate and unattractive, which can lead to extremely poor self-esteem and body image

9) Women with disabilities are often treated as if they do not know their own bodies by doctors who claim to know better; and are treated as non-compliant if they refuse to take a doctor’s advice on this basis.

10) Women with disabilities are often confined to the home (the private sphere) by the inaccessibility of the political and social spheres.

From this comment by Wildly Parenthetical, which was graciously left on the FAIL thread from hell. Remember, these are only the issues that she thought of off the top of her head.
