Jin’s death doesn’t get anywhere near the attention it deserves.
I mean, yes, of course, he wasn’t really dead, blah blah blah. But I was totally convinced he was, and I think many others were, too. (You know, like all the characters in the show?) They wanted us to think he was dead. And while it’s a totally gut-wrenching scene, it’s gut-wrenching because of Sun and her grief, rather than Jin and his death. And we’re talking here about a character who was with the show from the very start. When Charlie died, it wasn’t all about Desmond seeing it happen, or Claire grieving, you know? Further, there was no real lingering over his heroic actions and how he died trying to help his friends and stop the bomb. He didn’t even get slow motion music running towards the helicopter! Nothing!
Yes, yes, again, I know. He’s not dead. But even knowing that, I was kind of crying this time around, too. And it was mostly because of Yunjin Kim’s acting, but still. And then like a million and one more important things happen after that! Ben moves the island! The island which disappears! Desmond is reunited with Penny! We find out Locke is dead! ZOMG! And no one even fucking remembers that Jin is dead by the time it’s over. Charlie didn’t get that kind of treatment, either. Yeah, tons of shit always happens in the season finale, but I didn’t feel like his death was overshadowed nearly as much by them making contact with the boat. Hell, maybe it was because they played it up more.
So I don’t know. Maybe they didn’t want to play it up more specifically because he wasn’t really dead, but it just doesn’t seem right to me. Am I the only one?
